In just the second full year that Maine Golf has taken over the operations at Maine Golf Center Freeport, we saw a great uptick in both the number of rounds played and in the amount of programming offered to the general public. Junior golf is on the rise here in Maine, and at Maine Golf Center Freeport we were doing out part to get as much programming in place as we can to keep this trend moving forward.
Check out some of the exciting things that took place at Maine Golf Center Freeport in 2024:
2024 Highlights
- Over 1,800 rounds of golf played by Youth on Course participants, where the youth greens fee is only $5 for golfers aged 6-18.
- Local host site for the Drive, Chip & Putt Championship. MGC Freeport hosted over 100 junior golfers looking to move onto regionals and eventually Augusta National for the finals.
- Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Southern Maine activity access programs.
- Host of PGA Junior Golf Camps, instructional weeklong half-day camps of 12-18 juniors held multiple times over the summer.
- Host of PGA Junior Golf League, a season-long weekly practice and weekly match in a fun format. Approximately 26-30 juniors participated each session.
- Host of Adaptive Outdoor Education Center’s Horizons golf program, offering weekly clinics.
- Home course to the Freeport High School varsity golf team (12 players) and junior varsity team (20 players). Additionally, other local high school teams used the course for extra play when their home courses were busy during the high school season.
- Site of a 100 Hole Hike completed by Maine Golf staff, playing 100 holes in one day to raise funds for Youth on Course. Over $3,000 was raised to subsidize future rounds of discounted golf for participating members.
- Free golf exhibition open to the public featuring World Golf Hall of Famer Dennis Walters.
While a lot did happen in 2024, this is just the start.
