With the 2024 Maine Golf tournament season now behind us, and with well over 100 days of competition in the books from this year’s schedule, we’re pleased to announce the men and women who have earned Player of the Year (POY) honors. Points are awarded in most Maine Golf tournaments throughout the season, from weekly Play Days that offer small amounts of points based on field size, up to the biggest championships of the year where the best players in the state shine and earn the most points available.

The 2024 Senior Player of the Year award goes to Scott Dewitt of Biddeford-Saco CC. Having been a mainstay of competitive golf in Maine for years, Dewitt was a previous winner of the regular Player of the Year back in 2002. Since then he has kept his skills sharp over the past two decades, and has become one of the top senior players in the state of Maine since turning 55. However, despite many close calls at winning this title, this year marks the first time that he has won Senior POY honors.
“The Senior Player of the Year is an incredible honor,” says Dewitt. “I am reminded how fortunate we are to have so many excellent tournaments on great courses administered by the staff and volunteers of Maine Golf.”
The 62-year old southpaw had an exceptional year on the course en route to this honor. During the wraparound points season, Dewitt started with a bang, capturing the title at the 2023 Senior Match Play Invitational. He then found more success and Maine Golf trophies by partnering up with fellow Biddeford-Saco members to capture the 2024 Senior Four-Ball and Senior Club Team Championship.
Dewitt also had a T7 finish in the Senior Amateur and a T17 finish in the Maine Amateur Championship, which earned him Low Senior honors amongst Maine’s most talented field. He’s also a regular in men’s Play Days, where he finished as the low senior golfer in 8 of the 15 Play Days he entered over the season.
Looking back on the year, he recalls all the things that made 2024 one to remember. “Being nominated and inducted into the Maine Golf Hall of Fame, winning the Senior Four-Ball with Keith Patterson, being low senior at the Maine Amateur, and playing many great rounds with my son Caleb made this a very special year.”
He gives credit to his fellow members at Biddeford-Saco CC, whose membership includes some of the top players in the state that Dewitt gets to tee it up with throughout the year. He also mentions that a little more time on the practice green set him up for success over the season. “As we get older, we don’t lose our swings,” he admits. “We lose our touch!”
Dewitt recognizes that he’s fortunate to play in so many events spread across Maine. “Thanks to all of the hard-working superintendents, groundskeepers, and shop staff that keep Maine golf courses in great shape and running so well,” he says. “We play on so many outstanding courses, and it is all because of their consistent and dedicated efforts.”
