While the snow is falling and golfers spend some time away from the course, Maine Golf remains active in planning for future championships during the colder months. Every year we conduct the Maine Amateur and Maine Women’s Amateur Championships, the preeminent golf championships here in the Pine Tree State, where the state’s top players have been crowned for over a century.

Adding to the storied histories of both of these tournaments, we are excited to announce the host sites for the 2024 championships. The 2024 Maine Amateur Championship will be going to Purpoodock Club on July 9-11, followed a week later by the Maine Women’s Amateur Championship at Biddeford-Saco CC on July 16-18.

“Both Purpoodock and Biddeford-Saco have been wonderful supporters of Maine Golf over the years,” says Brian Bickford, the executive director of Maine Golf. “We look forward to returning to these great courses in 2024 where we’ll get to see the best players in Maine battle it out for the most coveted titles in the state.”

Purpoodock is a private club located in Cape Elizabeth, and recently celebrated its centennial just last year. This will be the fourth time the club has hosted the men’s Amateur, having previously held the event in 1972, 1987, and 2000.

Purpoodock Club

“Purpoodock Club has had a long and storied tradition in amateur golf, and it is a great honor to have been awarded the 2024 Maine Amateur,” says Tony Decker, the director of golf at the club. “We are excited and proud to showcase our wonderful club, which was founded more than a century ago, and a championship golf course, that has been recently renovated with all new bunkers and tees, to Maine’s top golfers.”

“Our membership is passionate about our club, and I am confident that we will put on a great event for both the golfers and spectators,” adds Jacob Brown, club president at Purpoodock. “I know there will be a lot of time and energy invested into making this a top quality event.”

The 2024 Maine Women’s Amateur will take place just a short distance away down the coast, with the ladies taking center stage the following week at Biddeford-Saco CC. The course has played host to numerous Maine Golf championships over the years and is looking forward to holding another premier event on its century-old grounds.

Biddeford-Saco CC

“We are honored to host the 2024 Maine Women’s Amateur Championship,” says Mike Caron, head professional at the club. “This Donald Ross designed golf course provides a fun and challenging tournament atmosphere, which is always welcomed here at Biddeford-Saco Country Club.”

Alluding to that feeling at the club, Biddeford-Saco club president Cody Berkowitz adds “we feel the competitors will enjoy the challenging course layout and various improvements we have made.”

The 2023 Maine Golf season begins in a few short months, with an exciting schedule of casual and championship events for players of all abilities from April to November. The schedules are highlighted this coming year with the men’s Amateur being played at Samoset Resort in Rockport for the first time in the history of the event, while the women’s Amateur will take place at Brunswick GC.
