SCARBOROUGH – After day one at the Maine Senior Match Play Invitational, the field had been whittled down from 16 players to the final four, who returned to Prouts Neck on Thursday morning for the semifinal matches. The players were greeted by showers early in the day, and the weather got progressively worse as the matches moved forward, ultimately stopping play.
With heavy rain forecast for the rest of Thursday, play was cancelled at 9:00 a.m. for the remainder of the day. Due to constraints with rescheduling the event, play will resume on at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 26 at Prouts Neck. The upcoming Tri-States Matches are this weekend on September 23-25 in Manchester, VT, and two of the four semifinalists will be representing Maine on that team this weekend, forcing the event to be moved to next Monday.
The morning’s first semifinal match featured Dan Falcone (Riverside GC) against Mike Nowak (Augusta CC). Falcone came into the event as the 16 seed and defeated number one seed and Maine Senior Amateur champion Keith Patterson in the opening round. Playing the steadiest golf among the field so far this week, Falcone was 3-up over Nowak when play was halted for the day. Due to scheduling conflicts, Nowak chose to concede the match, giving Falcone a berth in the finals on Monday.
In the second semifinal match, two Biddeford-Saco friends are playing for a spot in Monday’s final. Through 9 holes before rain stopped play, Scott Dewitt holds a 3-up lead over last year’s champion Mike O’Brien. Upon returning from the Tri-States in Vermont, Dewitt and O’Brien will resume their match on the 10th hole at Prouts Neck on Monday morning. The winner will advance to play Falcone on Monday afternoon where the Senior Match Play champion will be named.
