FALMOUTH – Ruby Haylock shot a second round 72 on Wednesday at Portland CC to maintain her lead in the 2022 Maine Women’s Amateur Championship. The 17-year old from Hartford will look to win her second Amateur title, having won at Augusta CC in 2020. Haylock, who plays out of Turner Highlands CC, sits at two-over par after impressive rounds of 70-72 over the first two days.
Chasing her down is the defending champion, Bailey Plourde, who shot the round of the tournament in the second round with a one-under par 69. Plourde, 22 and playing out of Sheepscot Links, made four birdies on the round to reach +6 after two days. Having started the day seven shots behind Haylock, she’s trimmed the deficit to four shots entering Thursday’s final round.
Plourde is a two-time champion of the Maine Women’s Amateur, with wins at Bangor Municipal GC in 2021 and at Rockland GC in 2018. She has multiple runner-up finishes in this event, including a playoff loss to Haylock in 2020. The stage is set for the two to duel again on Thursday at Portland CC.
Joining them in the final pairing is Erin Holmes (Val Halla GC), who shot a 74 in the second round playing alongside the leaders. After two days Holmes is +11 in third place, seven shots clear of the nearest player.
Thea Davis sits in fourth at +18, followed by past champion Jordan Laplume at +19. Host club member Kim Fogel is next at +20.
Thursday’s final round is forecasted to be hot and humid for the third straight day. After two rounds, the field was cut to the low 45 scorers and ties. The final round will begin at 7:30 a.m., with the leaders teeing off at 10:00 a.m.
