MANCHESTER — After seven months of Play Days all across the state of Maine, the yearlong Charlie’s Cup has come to an end. On Monday, October 16, the top finishers from the regular season converged at Augusta CC for the Charlie’s Cup Finals. In the end, Zibby Puleio of Dutch Elm GC and Mary Brandes of The Woodlands Club took home the season-long crowns and won the Charlie’s Cup.

The Charlie’s Cup is a yearlong contest that awards points to participating players at men’s and women’s Play Days throughout the season. Charlie’s Motor Mall has been a longtime supporter of Maine Golf and will serve as the title sponsor of this exciting tournament series.

The underlying mission of the Charlie’s Cup is to reward male and female golfers competing in Maine Golf Play Days for playing well and for playing often. It is similar to the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup in that it’s a yearlong competition. The more tournaments that a golfer plays in, the more chances he or she has to amass points that accumulate throughout the entire season.

The top 65 men and 35 women from the regular season were invited to the Finals, where points were doubled in the last event of the year. In addition to the yearlong title, players were also competing in a one day event with its own purse. Luke Ruffing and Merideth Koerner both shot 70 at Augusta CC to win the individual tournament on the day.

In all, a total of 716 different men and women earned points in the Charlie’s Cup throughout the season, so congrats to Zibby and Mary on being the two standing atop the podium at the end of the year! And congratulations to all of the players who finished at the top of the table to finish in the “bonus” money at the end of the year.

Maine Golf would like to thank Charlie’s Motor Mall in Augusta for their continued support and another successful year for the Charlie’s Cup.
