FALMOUTH – Ruby Haylock (Turner Highlands CC) took the early lead after the first round of the 2022 Maine Women’s Amateur Championship, firing a round of 70 (E). The recent Leavitt graduate made three birdies against three bogeys on her opening round to take a commanding seven stroke lead after 18 holes. Haylock won the Amateur title in 2020 at Augusta CC and hope to continue her solid play to earn her second win.

With 36 holes still to play, this tournament is far from over. Sitting tied for second place are Bailey Plourde (Sheepscot Links GC) and Erin Holmes (Val Halla GC), who both shot 77 (+7) on the day. Plourde is a two-time winner of this event (2018, 2021) and is coming off of a recent back surgery that has limited the number of rounds she has been able to play this year. Holmes, like Plourde, is a recent college graduate. Holmes is also a former Maine Golf champion, having won the Junior Championship in 2017.

Rounding out the top of the leaderboard after day one are Jordan Laplume (Dunegrass GC), Thea Davis (Hermon Meadow GC), and Erin Leland (Val Halla GC). All three players shot 80 and will play in the second-to-last group on day two.

Haylock, Plourde, and Holmes will go out in the final pairing at 1:20 p.m. in the second round.
