With the 2024 Maine Golf tournament season now behind us, and with well over 100 days of competition in the books from this year’s schedule, we’re pleased to announce the men and women who have earned Player of the Year (POY) honors. Points are awarded in most Maine Golf tournaments throughout the season, from weekly Play Days that offer small amounts of points based on field size, up to the biggest championships of the year where the best players in the state shine and earn the most points available.

The 2024 Women’s Player of the Year award goes to Thea Davis of Hermon Meadow GC. This is the second time that the 67-year old from Plymouth has earned this accolade, having earned the honor back in 2022. She is also the 2024 Senior Women’s Player of the Year winner, capturing both titles in the same year for the second time.

“I am honored and humbled to have earned both the Player and Senior Women’s Player of the Year,” says Davis. “I am competitive to a fault. I set goals each week and see how close I can come. Winning every week is unrealistic, but that’s my goal.”

Among the highlights of the 2024 season were a 5th place finish in the Maine Women’s Amateur at Biddeford-Saco, as well as a trip to the semifinals of the Women’s Match Play Championship. She was also the winner of the Legends Division of the New England Women’s Amateur at Samoset. But where Davis really shined was in the women’s Play Days on Tuesdays. Competing in 10 events over the year, she won 5 of these one-day events, showcasing her consistency around the state.

“I love the game of golf and being a part of such a wonderful organization as Maine Golf is awesome,” says Davis. “I usually play every week of the golf season in weekly events or tournaments. I like playing for points, it sounds silly, but I chase them. I usually travel to places where I might earn the most points.”

But despite her fierce on-course demeanor, she also admits to stepping back as she gets older and appreciating the game for what it is outside of the competition with her peers. “I am learning more about friendships, supporting each other, and sharing thoughts and ideas with other competitors”

She credits her husband for her support, calling him her number one fan who can’t wait to hear about her rounds when she gets home from playing. The fire continues to burn for Davis, who says that “I hope to continue to be competitive for a few more years. I do work at staying strong and working on my golf game every chance I get.”

In addition to the POY honors, Davis was also the winner of the yearlong Charlie’s Cup, which spans the entire season and honors the top player of the year in Maine Golf Play Days.
